Our long-standing logistics partner brought us into the project at the Mercedes plant in Rastatt as a “JIS enabler” following a successful tender.
Here, several hundred vehicles are manufactured every day, five days a week, across three shifts. The current process involved pre-assembly with re-sequencing. However, the JIS solution needed to be designed with sufficient flexibility to allow for a switch to traditional JIS assembly over the course of the ten-year project.
Our remit covered implementation across the entire logistics process, from goods receipt through intralogistics and production to dispatch control. This repeatedly called upon our experience and, above all, a great deal of flexibility.
The greatest challenge of the project lay in the battery itself: as hazardous goods, EV batteries require special storage, temperature monitoring and prescribed rest periods within the logistics process. These serve, among other things, to equalise temperatures and reduce the risk of condensation, as well as to stabilise the cells electrically and chemically. To meet these requirements within the schedule, we developed a special battery JIS template, which we successfully implemented here.
In addition, nemetris JIS, our Warehouse Management System (WMS) and the nemetris Dashboard were deployed. Following successful implementation over a period of 6–8 months, the project was transferred to our support model. nemetris Support is now available 24/6 to meet the site’s specific requirements.
